On 22 September 2021, the UK government unveiled a 10-year National Artificial Intelligence Strategy to establish the UK as an “AI superpower” seeking to compete with the US and China.
The strategy includes plans to advance AI research and innovation, improve the AI patent system etc. Launch a national AI research and innovation programme to promote the use of AI technologies in the public and private sectors; establish an Office of Artificial Intelligence (OAI) and launch the UK Research and Innovation Initiative (UKRI) to invest AI technologies in areas such as energy and agriculture; and establish an AI technology standards laboratory to prepare for participation in global AI technology regulation, and working with the Alan Turing Institute to update public sector AI ethics and safety guidelines and develop tools to ensure the ethical use of AI technology. Attract overseas investors to invest in AI companies and develop the next generation of home-grown AI technology talent.
