Construction completes on £45m Airport City Manchester hotels

Beijing Construction Engineering Group International has wrapped its work on the Ibis Budget and Holiday Inn hotels.

Located next to the bus, tram and rail station for Manchester Airport, the two hotels will offer a combined 542 beds to the area. BCEGI was awarded the £45m construction contract for the hotels in 2019, beginning construction in January 2020.

Now that practical completion has been reached, both hotels are in the middle of fit-out. Ibis Budget Manchester Airport is set to open in August, while Holiday Inn Manchester Airport will be operational in September.

The Holiday Inn has 280 rooms and boasts an open lobby with a bar, lounge and business centre. The hotel also has ground-floor meeting rooms, a pre-function lounge and Turkish restaurant Firin. Many of the rooms will have floor-to-ceiling windows offering guests a view of the Manchester Airport runway.

Ibis Budget has 262 rooms across seven floors.

“Reaching practical completion on both the Holiday Inn and Ibis Budget hotels is another great landmark moment at Airport City Manchester,” said Gareth Jackson, group property managing director at Manchester Airports.

BCEGI lead director Dongwen Yu praised his team’s work on the project.

“I’m delighted we have successfully delivered the new ibis budget and Holiday Inn hotels despite the unprecedented challenge of COVID-19,” Yu said. “The practical completion is a culmination of a great deal of hard work by the team, supply chains and all parties involved.”

The two hotels are the first in a future nine-hotel cluster to be built around the airport. When finished, the £250m hotel district will have a total of more than 2,400 hotel rooms.

MY Construction is at work building the third hotel in the cluster. The 132,400 sq ft Tribe hotel is part of the Accor Group, which also includes the Mercure, Sofitel and Novotel brands.

The £42m Tribe will com0plete in early 2024 and will have 412 rooms, a restaurant, bar, gym and an airline staff crew lounge.
